What is MaquiBerry

The Maqui berry grows on a small deciduous tree in Patagonia in southern Chile and parts of neighbouring Argentina in the temperate rainforests found there.  They are also known as Chilean wineberry and are popular with the locals.

More research is being done in to the health benefits of these maqui berries, but it has already been found that maqui berries have much higher levels of antioxidants than other superfood's, based on Oxygen radical absorbance capacity scores that have come back from research. They are shown as having about three times as many antioxidants as fellow South American superfood the acai berry and have more than 10 times as many as a blueberry and 40 times as many as the raspberry.

They're now available in North America and Western Europe, with a huge choice of outlets on the Internet.  Sadly some are little more than scams selling poor quality products.  The poor quality products may include berries which are only extract therefore not including the whole berry including the pulp, and the skin. This therefore removes the potency and the number of vitamins minerals and nutrients.  Others, dilute Maqui powder to the point where it is of very low potency by adding in fillers and flowing agents.

As a natural and healthy product, you would expect Maqui berry powder to be organic and organic versions are available, be careful though, as some are not organic and may contain harmful pesticides, undoing the good work that the Maqui berries have done to your body.

The benefits of antioxidants have been researched in more detail than the Maqui berry itself.  Almost all benefits of Maqui it seems are still under question at the current time, the main benefit seems to be that the fruit is high in antioxidants. 

AntioxidantsAntioxidants simply make people feel better -it is thought the reason for this is the way they boost energy levels and the immune system.  The antioxidants increase the number of white blood cells produced as well as reducing toxins released from foods and free radicals in the body, making you overall, more healthy and more able to fight off disease, particularly important in the winter where everybody seems to have some disease they seem set on spreading around.

Some people find that antioxidants help your brain work more efficiently and can stop it getting as tired.  Also they give an energy boost during exercise as the antioxidants increase your ability to exercise and  also means you recover more quickly afterwards. 

Many people also believe that fruit and vegetables in general, but particular those high in antioxidants help lower the risk of heart disease and potentially also kidney disease. It's also thought antioxidants help reduce free radicals which can cause cancer meaning that having fruits such as Maqui berries which are high in antioxidants can reduce the risk of getting cancer and may even reduce the speed with which cancer develops.
